Crusader Kings II: Jade Dragon

Crusader Kings II: Jade Dragon allows you to interact with China for protection and technological marvels -- and possibly face their wrath in the form of rebels or full-scale invasions. New gameplay features including a new Tributary system, Chinese Mercenaries, and much more will make the Transoxiana and India regions come alive with new surprises and challenges for even the most seasoned despot.
Flatter the Emperor with gifts of gold or concubines. Ask favors from the mighty prince. Stay on the good side of his appointed marshals on your borders.
Jade Dragon will feature:

The Imperial Majesty Request:

A new “China Screen” lays out the status and desires of the Emperor of China, letting you keep tabs on what he wants and how to earn his grace

Kow-tow For Now:

Submit to the Empire as a tributary, always keeping an eye on the waning power of the Emperor, so you can time your escape to freedom

Booty and the East:

Collect wondrous new Chinese artifacts for your characters; explore a new Silk Road system that adjusts returns based on China’s stability

Dictionary of Chinese Characters:

New Chinese and Tibetan portraits and Chinese units bring the empire to life

Eight New Casus Bellis:

You can never have enough

  • The Dragon of the Middle Empire has finally awakened and from behind the map he dramatically influences the story not only on the Asian continent. The addon brings new interesting mechanics, including the improved Silk Road system, and extends the game with eight new war pretenses. Otherwise everything is as it was and the owners of the previous DLC will enjoy it much more the anyone else.

  • This is what an expansion for this series should look like - something that doesn't feel minor and can impact choices in many areas of the actual main game itself; even ones not directly related to it. While Crusader Kings II: Jade Dragon is certainly not quite as epic as other expansions in the series, there is no denying the positives it brings, either, making it well worth the investment for those that have been enjoying the Crusader Kings II experience so far.

  • Jade Dragon takes a slightly different approach from prior area-and-culture focused expansions for Crusader Kings 2, putting much more emphasis on off-stage activities than making new realms playable. That means the bulk of this DLC takes place through menu interactions, but I think Paradox has done a good job fashioning an engaging system out of this restriction. China is both a major threat, and a source of great (potential) personal power for those rulers within its influence. If you have little interest in playing an eastern-located realm, or lack any of the DLCs mentioned towards the start of this review, Jade Dragon is less compelling (those Casus Belli are nice, but won’t justify the purchase on their own). Otherwise, this expansion does a fine job re-igniting interest in an area of the Crusader Kings 2 map outside the usual western Europe feudal suspects.

  • Jade Dragon adds precious little to Crusader Kings 2, which would have benefitted much more from a playable and visible Chinese region. This expansion feels far too feature-bare for its price tag, and even at a smaller price point none of it feels really impactful. Even when you have access to the China menu, you’ll likely find yourself progressing via other means.
