Problems such as fairly samey missions: getting a base, building a base, building a mega army, to then overwhelm their base, and there are a fair few missions like that in this game. But, all in all, Ancestors adds enough of a twist to that classic formula to keep most RTS fans on their toes, while giving them a decent level of enjoyment.
Fast RTS with great animated medieval troops clashing and conquering sectors like in Company of Heroes.
Beautifully presented tactical massacre in medieval times.
Ancestors of Legacy is an entertaining RTS in which the tactical aspects are enhanced and the management ones are automated so that the user focuses only on the planning and development of the battles. The limitation of units means that the movements have to be measured very carefully. There are a lot of factors such as terrain, lighting and orientation of the units that affect the development of battles.
When picking up Ancestors Legacy, you need to be aware that it’s not a carbon copy of Age of Empires or Warcraft III. A lot of gameplay elements were designed in a new, original way and even though at first it does cause confusion, it quickly turns out to be one of the game’s most notable strengths (which also include visuals and entrancing soundtrack). [07/2018, p.54]
Evolutionary rather than revolutionary, Ancestors: Legacy takes the best of the genre, adds a dash of Dark Age and at the end of it comes out as one of the strongest entries to the RTS stable this year.
Overall, Ancestors Legacy isn’t insanely different from other popular RTS entries out there. What it does have are a lot of interesting and unique options and gameplay strengths that will make it a popular choice for those RTS players that hold strategy and planning higher than overwhelming enemies by sheer force. The graphics, gameplay, and multiplayer modes make this title a successful first expedition into the RTS genre for Destructive Creations.
Ancestors Legacy is not for every player that loves the RTS genre because it lacks the depth and complexity of its kind, but at the same time will enchant newcomers to the style thanks to its simplicity, great and tactic encounters, attractive campaigns, marvelous aesthetics and an atmospheric soundtrack.
With its inspiration in history and spectacular camera, the new real-time strategy offers a vivid look at medieval warfare. The game will excite you, but its multiplayer is disappointing. [Issue#288]
If you are in search of a good RTS with a lot of single player contents, try Ancestors Legacy.
Ancestors Legacy could have been a revolution in the RTS genre if not for its extreme lack of content. Yet, a very deep gameplay mixed with superior animations and great AI make it one of the best RTS titles available on the market.
It’s a badass strategy simulator, one with deep gameplay and that glorifies what is maybe one of the most gnarly periods of human history. It makes for a wonderfully executed strategy experience. But I still long for the day that we leave behind this whole “historical accuracy” fallacy and devote our fantastic game development resources to something more deeply imaginative.
This is a very good strategy game for those who want to explore the genre for the first time or just enjoy it without digging too deep into it.
More often than not, Ancestors Legacy showed me a good time watching my berserkers, Teutonic knights, and Slavic tribesmen hack their way through forests, marshes, and the occasional open field. The weakness in the core infantry combat, which tilts a bit too much away from quick, tactical thinking and into correctly guessing how the enemy line will be arranged, was the main issue that kept me from really coming to love it.
Ancestors Legacy is a great new take on the RTS genre. While it has it's flaws, it's a breath of fresh air to a stagnant genre of games. It's laid back approach to real time strategy games allows more access to more players without causing too much effort to learn the game. Overall it's a great time.
Ancestors Legacy is a real time strategy with a strong focus on tactics. Inspired by medieval European history. Take command of your army as you storm through medieval Europe in an extensive series of campaigns.
Dark as hell, Ancestors Legacy is a good RTS.
This is a pleasant surprise. It is limited in certain aspects but the dynamic skirmishes are brutal and deliver.
Ancestors Legacy is short on content, but its story missions are diverse, and the skirmish mode can bring you a lot of fun.
Ancestors: Legacy is a strategy game full of technical issues that can totally spoil the whole experience. And yet, Destructive Creations managed to to create an interesting and fun game that's not notorious for being forcibly edgy and controversial. It is simply a good, middle-of-the-road game that offers a reasonable amount of fun.
A tactical real-time strategy which takes on medieval stories of strong warriors and unchallenged kings. It's not overflowing with originality, but it offers a portion of decent entertainment for several long evenings and not only for history fans and forged strategists. The game is an honest invitation to the dark times of European history, with a few freckles on beauty, but with a fast gradient and accessibility for almost everyone who does not have problems with the RTS genre.
Since you can’t have more than a dozen units at any time and defensive buildings can only be placed in pre-determined spots, your tactical options are extremely limited – and no matter what you choose, you’ll end up playing whack-a-mole with enemy troops. [Issue#231, p.72]
