Hardcore action/tactics/strategy game that can be very challenging at times, even frustrating.

Still today, I consider its graphics, controls, sounds great.

The game itself is somewhat violent as you need to kill a lot of soldiers, but not really bloody.
I would recommend it to any adult or high-school teen who can make a difference between violence and violence.

This was such a blast back in the late 90's, and it is so good of a game that it can still be greatly enjoyable today. It is a real challenge to make it to the last few levels, and you can be tremendously proud if you beat the final one. This is old school gaming, no tutorials, no hints, no arrows pointing you what to do next. A master piece too.

I love that this game is real-time "tactics" and not strategy. It's got the feel of a strategy game without the complexity of micro-management. The variety of different tactics that you can use on each map make this game feel incredibly deep and well thought out. Despite its age, the game play is highly enjoyab

This game defines a whole genre. Different characters with different abilities, a lot of challenging hard scenarios, great music, great ambientation, historically rich game... If you like this genre just go ahead and play this game if you haven't already, real time tactics don't get any better than this.

I just love this series (Behind Enemy Lines and Beyond The Call of Duty). This is the best 2D game in real-time tactics genre. Wonderful game-play and awesome storyline without modern day's heavy graphics. Each mission can be played in various ways depending on how you would like to use different character. These are the reasons why the series is still alive in era of games with extensive graphic consuming 3D rendering stuffs.

Please check my review in "Commandos: beyond the call of duty". That review applies here too. Overall, a good game with strong plot in each episode. If you are not the kind to enjoy first-person-shooter game and want to immerse yourself to WWII environment, then this is the game for you. Remember, that the graphics is as good as you can get during the period of 1998-99, and it requires patience and effort to deal with each episode in the game. Please check the screenshots in Google image to find out whether you would really like to play this kind of game. Personally, I recommend this game.

This game was so good in its day that it seemed to come from the future. Commandos4Life.

Un grande classico della storia videoludica.
Uno strategico in tempo reale avvincente e vario, con splendido design dei livelli e un giusto livello di sfida.

A long time ago, I had played the game when it was released. I didn't finish it due to the difficulty and finally had done it.

    Pros.:
    - It was a unique game with different characters, planning, precision.
    - Different abilities.
    - Nice story. Really. I like WWII and history.
    - Some fun stuff like alarm and so on.
    - The game had created or at least had developed a specific genre that blossomed into Desperados III, a great one!

    Cons.:
    - It is a challenging game. Tough game. At least for me. Sometimes glitches with the vision helped me.
    - The briefings were becoming shorter and simpler. It seemed to me that the developers kind of ran out of ideas and finished the game.
    - The game is outdated. Obviously and unfortunately.

I love that this game is real-time "tactics" and not strategy. It's got the feel of a strategy game without the complexity of micro-management. The variety of different tactics that you can use on each map make this game feel incredibly deep and well thought out. Despite its age, the game play is highly enjoyable and fans of 2D isometric maps will find that the landscapes and units are still well detailed and crisp, even at the low resolutions the game offers.

one of the best tactics game i ever played (behind enemy lines, Beyond the Call of Duty and men of courage).
tactics - strategy - stealth...all combined excellent. i wish for more games like that.

Commandos is a good strategy game where you control a small squad of soldiers. It reminds Jagged Alliance 2 but works in real time, and you can't issue orders in pause. Usually you need to come to enemies from behind, learn their patrol routes, and track their fields of view which the game shows as green cones. The graphics were great for the time and have aged well. The sounds and the music are good.

Giving it only 7 out of 10 because the game is extremely difficult and gets frustrating in later missions just because you fail to give orders fast enough. Also, some missions are puzzle-like and require a certain strategy to be won, and this strategy must be executed with precise timing.

    Wrong formula:
    - controlling all characters at once a specially when they are not same place. Usually game is moving one commando rest is sleeping. Worst is moving them same time.
    - shooting range limit
Ive played many years ago, and new games with same gameplay formula, is same unattractive. Should been or AI controlled tactics, programmable game, or one hero at once or turn based.
