Dex is a game that definitely deserves to see and experience. It is not the game of the year or the best indie RPG we've ever played, but it's a well-built effort that will excite fans of 2D action games, sprinkled with reasonable quantities of RPG mechanisms and a satisfactory story to support it.
There are a few bugs here and there, but they hardly keep Dex from being an overall enjoyable ride.
Brief dialogue, complex, but underexplained plot, practical minimalism in combat and no attempts to toy with 3D – two dimensions is more than enough to navigate ventilation shafts, evade hazards like toxic gas, stealthily take down a guard or break your legs in a miscalculated jump. [Issue#199, p.82]
Its retro-style gameplay may be a bit too simplistic for its own good, but, nevertheless, Dex manages to depict a detailed cyberpunk environment and tell a well-written story.
Dex delivers an interesting story and a solid gameplay, but there are some bugs and aspects with some room for improvement that prevent it from becoming a better experience.
Dex really surprised me. Under its modest externals I found a decent, complex RPG game incorporating everything that makes cyberpunk an attractive setting. [08/2015, p.56]
You can get lost following all the story lines in Harbor Prime, a beautiful distopian city. But some flaws are able to bring you back to reality.
Mediocre fights and design errors couldn't beat the fact, Dex is a pleasant cyberpunk RPG for the fans of the genre.
A nice action RPG, with a lot of character and an interesting story, but some annoying flaws in terms of execution and a pretty bland action gameplay.
Dex conveys a sense of depth while remaining somewhat shallow; regardless, it is an enjoyable cyberpunk experience.
Overall, Dex is a worthwhile game featuring a compelling, beautifully rendered universe and setting, a well-paced immersive story, and deep characters. It offers a very enjoyable experience that will keep players driven to explore its world and progress in its narrative. The core foundations of its gameplay styles are fun, and chock-full of potential, even if that potential isn't fully realized in some areas. In many ways, Dex's main flaw is that the game doesn't deliver more of the possibilities promised by its strong foundations, and that is not the worst flaw for a game to have.
Dex has a lot of ideas and mechanics, but ultimately feels unfocussed as a result. [Oct 2015, p.64]
A combination of a decent role-playing game and a so-so platformer — not the best result after four years of development.
Dex creates an interesting world, but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. It's a Kickstarter-funded game that quickly shows lack of budget and skilled developers. If you can see past the shortcomings and crude fighting system you will find a few hours of decent fun.
Heavily bugged boredom succeeded only with causing despair and reluctance to continue. After a lot of patches it will be playable, but definitely there’s little chance patches add any fun to the game. [Issue#253]
It offers all the right elements that the genre needs, but fails to utilise them in any particularly original, entertaining or - indeed - working state. [Issue#162, p.112]
