  • Forgotton Anne is a wholly unique and evocative experience. While it delivers on the selling point of the beautiful hand-drawn anime art style, it backs it up with fantastic story and engaging gameplay. This is truly something special we have here, something that must be explored by anyone who can get their hands on the game.

  • A game that knows its roots but is willing to try something new as well. It takes the darker aspects of Spirited Away — because, let’s be honest, it’s kind of terrifying to see your parents transform into animals and then find yourself whisked away to another world with no way home — and explores them. And it does so with a lot of style.

  • This game won’t appeal to everyone. There are those that will look at only the surface and dismiss it. The blending of types of gameplay can be difficult to come to terms with, if you’re looking for a single focussed style. It did take me some time to really appreciate it and part of that was the controls required for the platformer format in which the game has been designed. Yet in the end I really enjoyed the variety and could appreciate the complexity of such a well-rounded game.

  • Forgotton Anne is an unforgettable voyage and a really charming videogame.

  • Forgotton Anne is, without a doubt, a wonderful adventure, with a story and exquisitely animated characters that put the player in a pensive mood, while the puzzles and platforming bring the desired alternation between storytelling and action. I believe, however, that the game would have benefited a lot from a higher gameplay difficulty and more tough/grey morality choices, elevating it to an all-time classic status.

  • Forgotton Anne is a beautifully-crafted, polished experience that is a couple notches from being a stellar gaming experience.

  • The story won’t shock and disturb you as much as Game of Thrones might, but it’s a story anyone can engage with. It’ll even have you reeling in genuine grief when you’ve distilled an old sock.

  • I think that anybody who wouldn’t enjoy this game knows who they are. While I wouldn’t put Forgotton Anne into the category of an essential for gamers of all types, I would easily recommend playing this game to basically anybody who would give it even a passing interest. It is the type of game that punches way above its weight, and it managed to surprise me.

  • It looks like a Ghibli movie, and every character is amazing on its own. Behind this childish exterior, you will find a very mature story filled with moral dilemma's. And a bit too much puzzle platform gameplay.

  • Forgotton Anne is a wonderful adventure in a dystopian world, enriched by a beautiful anime style.

  • Forgotten Anne isn’t revolutionnary in any way but still, it finds a good balance between narration and gameplay and brings the player in a unforgottable journey.

  • Forgotton Anne is a great storytelling game, even if the gameplay lacks some challenge.

  • The adventure gamer’s platformer, Forgotton Anne’s endearing exploration of lost objects come to life is sure to please all but the most dexterously challenged.

  • An applause for the Danish team ThroughLine Games, which gives us an emotional journey that even the teacher Hayao Miyazaki would be proud of. Do not be stunned by the atmosphere of this game is impossible.

  • Forgotton Anne is an interesting mix of Adventure and Platformer with an emotional Story. The gorgeous Art Style and the great music support the overall fantastic atmosphere of the game.

  • Forgotton Anne is a visual splendor rivaling the likes of fellow animated, but Triple-A, titles like Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom. Its mesmerizing story competes readily with its spectacularly beautiful art, for which the platforming and puzzling gameplay is only a complement. Forgotton Anne is unmistakably a diminutive treasure that deserves to never itself be forgotten.

  • games(TM)

With an engaging plot that's as much a commentary on consumerism as it is a tale of morality, Forgotton Anne's inspired narrative is backed up by some solid and engaging gameplay. [Issue#200, p.74]

  • Forgotton Anne's absorbing world of forgotten things imbued with life—from baby blankets to an old piece of luggage mourning his crystallized companions—is one I was happy to trot through more than once, even just to see the slightest character interactions change.

  • For parents looking for a new game to play with their children or for anyone who with an abiding love of sweet-tempered cartoons “Forgotton Anne” deserves a look.

  • A very interesting adventure game, capable of truly send a vast range of emotions about what we have forgotten. Be ready to deal with a poor implementation of platforming, anyway.

  • Forgotton Anne is good at telling a story, and creating a new world filled with magical things. The hand-painted art style and the background music are remarkable, and the puzzle part has some strengths too. However, the handling feel of this game is not satisfactory enough, which kind of reminds me the original version of Prince of Persia.

  • ThroughLine Games should be proud for achieving quite an authentic anime aesthetic, in both visuals and animations. It’s a rare feat to see platform games with entirely unique visuals, while also accompanied by a well-written story, albeit not entirely original in its meanings.

  • A puzzle-platformer that's elevated by its winsome anime aesthetic.

  • Excellent story, magnificent look: Forgotton Anne is a delicacy for anime fans who can do without complex gameplay.

  • I may have gotten the bad ending, been sick of the puzzle format and hated the platforming, but the forgotlings were cute, the world was a pleasure to look at and the few cutscenes were noteworthy. Ultimately, Forgotton Anne is held back by tired, repetitive game systems, and will itself soon be forgotten.

  • Forgotton Anne is a charming little adventure, with an interesting, and good-looking, hand painted world that's fun to live on for the eight or so hours that this will last. Unfortunately, the story never really manages to become as emotional and engrossing as it thinks it is, and the rest of the experience, the actual jumping and puzzle-solving, feels more like useless baggage.

  • Exciting and original at first, Forgotton Anne quickly loses its steam as the story progresses on its way to the land of forgotten video games.

  • Edge Magazine

In all likelihood, we'll remember its delightful world for some time. In future years, we may even enjoy the few fuzzy memories of Forgotton Anne that linger. For now, however, they're tinged with disappointment. [July 2018, p.114]
