There’s a huge amount of fun to be had here, but it’s not a game that will appeal to those in the market for a realistic depiction of the joys of the internal combustion engine. Realism has been traded for pure insanity, so if you prefer something more like Forza or Gran Turismo then this won’t be the game for you. If you were a fan of Rollcage, then you’ll love this.
The driving physics are unique, the track layout is mostly spectacular and together with the clever battle system this is one of the best arcade racers in recent years - despite some minor technical flaws.
GRIP: Combat Racing promises to fall into the first category, bringing justice to an old series of games that have become cult classics themselves. The graphics and physics engine aren't just there just to give the series a facelift, they take what it advertised as its strong point, speed and death-defying acrobatics, and crank them up to eleven!
GRIP: Combat Racing is an exhilarating racing experience. There are some flaws such as a considerable increase in difficulty during the last quarter of the campaign, overly aggressive enemy A.I and physics that, sometimes, take hold in an unpredictable manner, but its bountiful content, beautifully designed tracks and adrenaline-infused action, constitute an alluring game.
The spirit of Rollcage lives back in Grip: Combat Racing, where you speed your way up upside down until victory. The Rivals system is genius, but Caged Element didn't fully explore its potential. Beautiful tracks and a tense campaign are definitely highlights of this game.
Rollcage resurrection, friends. With its arcade feel and well crafted tracks, GRIP : Combat Racing is a cool little game every 90's arcade racers lovers should play.
Overall, GRIP Combat Racing is a fantastic spiritual successor to Rollcage racing that doesn't just pay tribute to the series, but also carves out its own nuances.
Straight from the early 00s, GRIP: Combat Racing is a fast and paced futuristic racing game that will please every nostalgic of the arcade genre in the style of Rollcage.
Grip is a nerve-fraying distillation of speed, fury, and thumping techno beats.
If you are a Wipeout fan and not averse to a round of Mario Kart, you belong to the target group of Grip and have a lot of fun with the game. Especially the speed devil races let the adrenaline level rise, while the weapon events provide a lot of pleasure. Unfortunately the joy diminishes with time, because career structure and presentation are rather dull. The PS4 version is technically clean and therefore absolutely recommendable for fans of action racers.
This Rollcage tribute feels actually quite fresh, and proves this type of arcade racer still has a lot of potential. As a game, it has some rough edges, but we’ve had a great time with it.
When GRIP: Combat Racing works, it’s a vertiginous racer with a unique mechanic that defies gravity. However, there’s some asperities in terms of gameplay and track design that makes us not fully enjoy some of its events.
While often fun, GRIP: Combat Racing’s opening hours will put some folk off, due to some iffy balancing issues and awkward track design. Stick with it and you’ll find an entertaining, old school combat racer.
GRIP: Combat Racing will delight the nostalgics grown up on bread and Rollcage, accustomed to frills and testosterone-rich races. However, bringing back past productions is a risky choice, and it is precisely on certain roughness that the stock loses points, precluding excellence due to smudges in the design of the tracks and in the collision system.
Grip: Combat Racing is a fast-paced experience that is sometimes hindered by its own level design. Online matches and game optimization are where it truly shines. The campaign mode, though, becomes more of a chore than something to celebrate.
GRIP: Combat Racing demands constant discipline from its audience while exhibiting little itself.
Held back by baked-in design decisions, muddy graphical effects, and non-exciting sound design, it’s doubtful that GRIP could make any significant comeback due to its flaws. With these elements in mind, GRIP: Combat Racing should take a pass from prospective purchasers.
