Milky Way Prince – The Vampire Star

A visual novel about an abusive relationship, idealization, and intimacy.

Live a summer of dysfunctional love through branching storylines, twists, sudden changes, and a special mechanic where you choose which senses to use with your boyfriend. In these moments, you will learn about him, his personality, and his past, making you question everything.

Milky Way Prince is entirely designed, programmed, illustrated, and scored by a very young author, Lorenzo Redaelli. The story itself is partially autobiographical.

"During my experience with a borderline partner, I thought that falling in love with him was like becoming part of a binary star system. It’s the rarest, most precious thing in the universe – but the closer they get the more unstable they become. My idea was to create an immersive experience where the player is asked to try to understand the dynamics of this unusual relationship. The character you interact with adapts their behavior to yours – using academic terminology, they could set up “rage tests”, “love bombing", or otherwise guilt trip you. The plot's branching storyline is guided by variables such as “submission” and "interest” that fluctuate at each interaction."

  • Semi-autobiographical dark romance story
  • Branching narrative paths with multiple endings
  • Intimate new sensory gameplay system
  • Character art inspired by Suehiro Maruo and Masaaki Yuasa
  • 3D environments influenced by the stage design of Robert Wilson
  • 30+ minutes of baroque electropop original soundtrack

  • It won't be all clean and perfect, but it carries on a complex story with honesty and intransigence by pumping blood through the veins of its characters.

  • As an experience, Milky Way Prince is experimental, entirely unique and one that I’m glad exists. I imagine it’ll hang in the subconscious of most people who give it the time of day, but the subject matter will be too much for some to bear.

  • Raedelli has found the right language and the most suitable visual choices to transform into a code an experience that marks forever, and that emerges with harsh reality in the final stages of the game.

  • Milky Way Prince - The Vampire Star is unconventional, adult, bold, and aims quite high, maybe even too high for the first experiment of a one-man studio. Many elements of the plot are just sketched, so sometimes it's hard to feel involved with the two young lovers. The sections where the player choose the sense to interact with are interesting, but unfortunately followed by slow paced moments with not that much to do. If you are not afraid to be more of an onlooker than a player, this game is easy to recommend. And it’s short, so you’ll have no excuse not to finish it.

  • Milky Way Prince - The Vampire Star is a Graphic novel that tells a story about a morbid story about an ill love and a partner with bipolar disorder.

  • Milky Way Prince portrays sex and toxicity in relationships in a very mature fashion. However, the character and story development is a bit rushed.

  • Milky Way Prince is a unique and sought-after title. It won’t meet everyone’s taste.

  • Milky Way Prince: The Vampire Star uses an experimental visual style to tell a story about a topic that is very tough to talk about. While it exceeds in conveying these themes, it feels empty and pushy. All of the actual content in the game is condensed into the first few hours, and then there’s really nothing more to it. I enjoyed the artistic approach and themes, but the execution makes it tough to recommend.

  • Ultimately, Milky Way Prince – The Vampire Star is too outlandish for its own good and doesn’t make for a satisfying game in its current form. Its audiovisual design is commendable, but with awkward dialogue, peculiar scenes and a hard to follow story, it’s very hard to recommend.

  • This tale demands more detail. It requires more time spent in filling out the world and its characters. If the game had spent more time on these points, we’d be looking at one hell of a harrowing and affecting story. As it stands right now though, Milky Way Prince feels like a massively missed opportunity.
