The Signal From Tölva is easily Big Robot's best game yet: a lean, intelligent sci-fi shooter with a watchmaker’s eye for detail that knows its strengths and plays to them beautifully.
It falls a bit flat on some of the more traditional fronts for an open-world shooter, but The Signal From Tölva still makes for an atmospheric, absorbing trek across a strange and ancient landscape. Impressive effort.
Quotation forthcoming.
The Signal from Tölva will appeal science fiction and robots lovers. Although they don't explain the plot well enough, you'll enjoy the gameplay engaging in battle robotic factions and exploring the planet. In addition, the graphic art of the title and sound effects will make us feel in Tölva, wanting to discover the origin of the mysterious sign that took us there in the first place.
A small game in a big universe. Tolva is a slow burner more about exploration than combat. [June 2017, p.70]
The Signal From Tölva serves up a promising sci-fi concept, one that is made more intriguing by the ability to manipulate robot factions and some occasional awe-inspiring sights and sounds. But sometimes a slow burn can be a bit too slow thanks to its plodding movement speed, and that’s the case here. If you’re willing to wade through some deliberate pacing and lots of walking between repetitious shootouts with similar robot enemies, there are some intriguing bursts of action and sci-fi lore waiting for you on the hills of Tölva.
A light, short and pretty Far Cry clone with robots. It seems to me the developers implemented all their basic ideas and then ran out of money, willingness or skills to push the game a bit more, towards true uniqueness. [06/2017, p.68]
Instead of an open world Big Robot should have worked on variety. But even with the predominantly simple run-and-gun-mechanics it is quite fascinating to unravel Tölva's mysteries.
