Rebuilt Townsmen – A Kingdom continues THQ Nordic’s policy of re-releasing the franchises they’ve purchased, and while it is a very fun city building simulator, its roots in mobile platforms slows down the speed of many gameplay functions. All in all, Rebuilt Townsmen is a solid city building simulator for mobile devices, but when it comes to competing with PC titles, it’s a different story.
An ideal recommendation for veterans of the genre, Townsmen: A Kingdom Rebuilt scratches a really familiar itch. But there's nothing new here to entice newcomers away from other titles.
Townsmen – A Kingdom Rebuild is burdened with limitations that are usual for mobile ports, but still does really well when it comes to the realization of core city-builder mechanics.
There are two audiences that are going to love this game. The first are the original fans that were looking for a reason to play the game again. This updated version will serve them well, adding support for high screen resolutions, a bunch of new missions and a cleaned up UI. Better yet, if you owned the original PC version you will get the update free of charge. Yet it’s the second audience, the newcomers, that will truly value Townsmen: A Kingdom Rebuilt. For them this is an excellent introduction into the genre. The new missions do an excellent job of introducing core city building mechanics and there are few better games that will ease you into learning how to play this type of game.
At its root, this city builder is thematically and structurally solid. The only issues with it is that the growth of a city is a very linear and repetitive process that only a few romps through the scenarios and a player will have easily seen almost all there is to see. Those plays will have been fun, but there is little longevity in here at all. While building a city a few times is fun, it is so similar every time it quickly loses its charm.
In all honesty, if you really want to play Townsmen - A Kingdom Rebuilt you would be better off playing it on whatever mobile device you are using. As it is, the port to PC has not only done the game no favors but actively leaves it worse by a wide margin. If you are looking to build, I would find a different kingdom to do it in.
