Outside of these minor issues, Valkyria Chronicles 4 is undoubtedly the best game I've played so far in 2018.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 is the sequel I’ve been waiting for, returning to the roots of what made the first game so special.
Combines robust storytelling with consistently inventive, surprising missions. Not just a return to form, but a new series peak.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 returns to the roots of the franchise to deliver the sequel that we have been waiting for 10 years. The best entry in the series so far and an awesome starting point for future Valkyria Chronicle games.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 went back to the roots of the original. The gameplay has stayed nearly the same after nine years, with the exception of the new Grenadier class, but it still stands as firm as a rock. If you enjoyed the original, you will enjoy VC4.
Sometimes you need to take a step back to move forward – yes, it’s a platitude, but that’s exactly what happened with Valkyria Chronicles 4. Forget about Valkyria Revolution. The latest entry in the series goes back to the roots and reminds us why the first Valkyria Chronicles stole our hearts a decade ago. The developers restrained themselves from making unwelcome changes and if they decided to alter something, they did it wisely. [12/2018, p.80]
If you enjoyed the first game, my bet is that you’ll really enjoy this game. If you’ve never played a Valkyria Chronicles game before and enjoy strategy and tactics mashups with some distinct aesthetics and gameplay flavor, this is the perfect game to jump into the series with.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a solid game, but if you are new to the series, I suggest to start with Valkyria Chronicles Remastered. VC4 builds on its ideas and the fans will enjoy it a lot, although I am a bit worried that the developers do not know where to go next — it is painfully apparent in their approach to gameplay mechanics and evolution of their fictional universe.
Harkening back to the first game in the series, Valkyria Chronicles 4 does very little to improve upon its tried and tested formula. A new set of characters and a few welcome additions however are enough to make this one just as enjoyable as the original Valkyria Chronicles ten years ago.
With few major changes from the core formula, fans of the series will feel right at home with Valkyria Chronicles 4. The game changes enough for the better and offers some degree of fresh air to the experience even after four entries. Any flaws that were present in previous titles still exist to some extent, holding it back from true greatness, but the general formula is more than solid enough and stays fresh despite the '4' in the title.
An admirable return to form, Valkyria Chronicles 4 feels like a safe bet for both newcomers and veteran commanders alike.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 doesn't necessarily tell a new tale, but it doesn't have to; for all of its clichés and expected twists, there's a charm to the game's unwillingness to let up as it drives you and your friends forward at a rapid clip towards its bittersweet end.
The game puts as much emphasis on narration as it does on turn-based combat, but if you’ve ever played a JRPG or two, Valkyria’s story won’t surprise you – you already know by heart these character types and plot twists. Same goes for combat – it’s so similar to the first game, it’s embarrassing. [Issue #233, p.60]
